A Thousand Conversations Kick Off Meeting

Metro Vancouver Alliance is launching our Thousand Conversations Campaign.

Since the Founding assembly in 2014 the Metro Vancouver Alliance has grown by leaps and bounds. Over the past two years we have launched successful campaigns around the issues identified in our first listening campaign – income justice, affordable housing, transit and social inclusion.

Now it’s time to start a new round of ‘listening’ to explore people’s experience around these four issues and check whether they continue to resonate with our members. We particularly want to engage the organizations that have joined MVA since the founding, as well as re-energizing all of our members.

A Listening Campaign is a focused effort to build community in a specific organization by giving people a chance to share their stories and concerns. Through one-on-one or small group ‘house meetings’ people are encouraged to talk about how they experience life in their community.

The strength of community organizing is that we use listening as a way of deepening the bonds between people both inside and between institutions, so that they will be more powerful when they come to take up the issues they have surfaced.  We do that by hearing their stories and finding out what REALLY matters to them – not just what they’ll grumble about, but what they will be willing to put their time and energy into over the long haul.

The May 7th and 24th meetings will bring together delegates from member institutions, as well as interested observers, to discuss how this listening process can be carried out in each institution.

We will be introducing the key tools for listening and considering:

  • What kind of meetings – house meetings, one-to-ones, or discussion groups attached to existing activities – would work best for each organization?
  • What kind of training and resources do organizations need to help them carry out this process?
  • And how might MVA member organizations use this listening campaign to help them reach their own internal goals?

We are asking you to send 2-3 delegates from your organization to the meeting. It would be good if your delegation included those in your leadership who have attended MVA training or had some other involvement with MVA. But the most important qualification for delegates is interest and enthusiasm for developing a program that will bring real, concrete change for to our community.

Help us to make ‘A Thousand Conversations’ a success to enable people to act effectively on the issues that affect them most.
