2020 Organizing Plan

Adopted by Delegates at Assembly 22 Sept 2020

 

In order to have an Alliance that most effectively serves its member organizations and is better able to advance the Common Good, MVA members commit to the following as it moves to re-launch with a full-time Organizer:

  1. To increase the Diversity of the membership so that the Alliance can better claim to “Stand for the Whole”—equipping ourselves to develop an anti-racism and decolonization lens and transforming MVA into a vehicle for institutional allyship and reconciliation;

Next Step: We will recruit 6 local leaders to participate in the international IAF pilot of the “Wrestling with the Truth of Colonialism” training in October 2020. We will support subsequent efforts to contextualize the training to Vancouver and make it available to our members.

 

2. To keep its intertwined goals of internal and external organizing in Balance – better attending to its member institutions and using issue campaigns not as ends in themselves but as means of developing leaders, strengthening member institutions, and building inter-institutional relationships at a local scale;

Next Step: We will intentionally recruit reputable and effective institutional leaders to participate in our Sponsorship Team. We recognize that we need buy-in from local civil society leaders who understand the principle of “power before program” to make a case for the alliance and attract broad buy-in to our organizing project, but it is up to us to bring them on board.

3. To develop wide ownership over the Financial Sustainability of the Alliance—working towards best practices reg.arding balance between hard/soft money, reserve funds for challenging times, and a budget can cover the costs of our IAF Contract, our lead organizer’s salary, and administrative staff.

Next Step: We will participate in a delegates Accountability Session on 15 October 2020 to close our funding gap in order to hire a full-time organizer. At this session we will consider options for raising “hard money,” including revising our membership dues structure; and for raising “soft money,” including launching an Individual Donor Campaign.
